2014 was THE year of the biotech IPO. 82 companies raised an aggregate of $5.7 billion in US IPO proceeds, eclipsing the $2.7 billion raised in 2013, and even topping the previous industry high of $4.8 billion raised in 2000. But below the headlines, the “Class of 2014” was a study in contrasts – for example, 24 of these biotechs were seven years or less from founding to IPO, while the same number were 14 years or older. BioSci has analyzed the Class of 2014 by several of these contrasting attributes, including venture capital raised in pre-IPO financings. We also review recent trends in “Big Ticket” alliances.
